August 24 – Upside Down?

“Ah, you who hide deep from the LORD your counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, ‘Who sees us? Who knows us?’ You turn things upside down! Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, ‘He did not make me'; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, ‘He has no understanding'”?  Is. 29:15,16

Devotional Thought For The Day

This of course is the posture of many people – who actually play with the whole concept of “God” as if He were mere clay, the invention and creation of man. It is the natural and normal consequence of detachment from God’s Word, Holy Scripture, and a refusal to be submissive and reverent toward that written Word of God. This is “turning things upside down.”  That people also cover over this dreadful disrespect for God with a veneer of “piety,” whether that of “intellectualism” or “religion,” is thoroughly despicable. This is “hiding” in the darkness, trying to hide our “counsel” from God. That we are naturally inclined toward this, and acculturated to it, should give us pause for serious and humble soul-searching.

Consider evolutionists, who reject God as Creator and Maker. Consider those who think of mankind as nothing more than a highly developed animal. Consider those who reject the moral teachings of Holy Scripture, who argue that their immoralities are actually “good” and should be acceptable to all – who accuse God of having “no understanding.” Consider those who ignore or side-step what Scripture asserts and instead organize their lives and relationships as they desire. Consider those who obscure God’s Word because it seems unreasonable to them, or those who cannot live with mystery but reject it for the sake of human reason, what makes sense to them. Consider those who start new religions – fashioning new conceptions of “god” and pushing these as real and true. Consider that we often sit around discussing these things as mere “concepts” and “ideas” and that we act as if we are free to be influenced and to come to our own conclusions – apart from or in spite of God’s Word, as if no One “sees us” or “knows us.”

As “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God,” so also this wretched rebellion against God inheres in all of us. The antidote and cure is not figuring out ways to be more comfortable and self-assured about continuing on in the same patterns of thinking and behaving.  Rather, God’s Word calls us back to reality, to grasp the way things truly are, and to humbly repent of our arrogance and rebellion against Him. God calls us back to Himself, to His gracious mercy, forgiveness, love, and salvation in Christ Jesus.  And in the warmth, aura, and glow of His love – learned only through His Word – He also bids us to return to Him by submission to His Word in all matters of faith, being, and living – so that He remains the Maker and ground of all reality for us, and that we not replace Him with our own “consciousness,” “reason,” and “being.”

It must be heart-rending to God, the level to which human thinking and being has sunk in rebelling against Him and rejecting the wisdom of His Word and the warmth of His love. Let us recognize this darkness also where it exists within us, that we humbly repent and allow God to heal us through His love and His Word. Surely this is His good and gracious will for us, and the greatest blessedness available to us.

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, You came to bring light into the world – yet the world continues to reject even You, the glorious only-begotten Son of the Father. You came to bring forgiveness, mercy, and reconciliation with God – and even this is rejected and spurned by so many. We too dabble with rebellion and disrespect for You. Lord, have mercy on us. By Your powerful and blessed Word, restore us in Your salvation and renew a right spirit within us. Amen.
