August 3 – Into The Love Of God

NOTE:  There will be no devotions for the next two weeks as we will be out of town.  Past devotions can be accessed at the links listed below.  “May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.”

“Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the Word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith.  But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command.  May the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.” 2 Thess. 3:1-5

Devotional Thought For The Day

The world is a dangerous place and there is need for us to pray for all who are involved in spreading the Word of the Lord into all the world. The problem is that “not all have faith,” and when there is no faith in or understanding of the love of God, wicked and evil men find ample “justification” for perpetrating all manner of persecution and violence against servants of the Gospel. This has occurred even in more civilized parts of the world, and even within so-called “Christian” nations. From time to time efforts to eradicate the Word of the Lord [and those who are teaching it] become more organized and systematic. So let us pray often for the servants of God’s Word, that God would protect them and keep them faithful.

Of this we can be certain, that the Lord is faithful. All that He has promised is true and will surely come to pass.  He is also faithful in establishing us and guarding us from the “evil one.” This does not mean that we will be kept from persecution and violence, but that we will be kept in faith to eternal life. This is the most important thing – for we know that life in this world is temporary and fleeting, but “he that believes the Son has everlasting life,” and God has promised “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” [Rev. 2:10] And always we have confidence in the Lord regarding His dear children of faith.

To this end we also pray for one another that the Lord will “direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ.”  Nothing is more important for us than this – it is the very heart of faith and spiritual life, God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. We know the nature of Christ’s steadfastness toward us – and this is precisely the steadfastness that we desire for our own faith and love. God alone can supply this to us as we continue to meditate upon His great love for us, so that regardless of what opposition we may be facing we remain firm and resolute in the new life He has given to us.

The conflict and danger will continue so long as unbelief and the dishonoring of God’s Word persists – until the day of Christ’s return in glory. Sinful rebellion against God, even against His love for us and the gift of His dear Son, is incorrigible and persistent in those who have hardened their hearts against Him. But God’s love is just as incorrigible and persistent and in the end He will have the last word. That sure and faithful word guarantees our eternal blessedness within His kingdom. In the interim, let us continue faithfully in our prayers for the success of God’s Word and the safety of His servants, as our hearts and minds dwell on His great love for us and the steadfastness of Christ!

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for Your great love for us and Your steadfastness in blessing us. Keep our hearts and minds firmly focused on Your love no matter what our circumstances may be. Preserve Your Word and grant success to all who proclaim it, that many more may be softened and blessed to know You. Amen.
