February 11 – The Covenant Of Love

“You have said, ‘I have made a covenant with My Chosen One; I have sworn to David My servant: I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’ Selah.”  Psalm 89:3,4

Devotional Thought For The Day

The establishment of the Davidic Kingdom and the nation of Israel as at least a strong regional power foreshadowed the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, His establishment of the church, and His reign over the church for all of eternity.  This covenant was fulfilled in the birth, ministry, suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of our dear Savior and Lord Jesus Christ – whose self-sacrifice of atonement has taken away the sin of the world.  While political kingdoms come and go, and the visible structures of the church – institutions – also come and go, the reign of the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of love, remains firm and strong in the hearts and minds of millions of people to this day.  He reigns over the church not with physical power, but rather with the power and compulsion of His great love for us – as conveyed to us in His Word [Holy Scripture, the Bible] and the precious Sacrament of His body and blood, “given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” [His Words of promise!]  So His kingdom is not “of this world” [not operating on the principles and dynamics of worldly kingdoms] but His kingdom is certainly in this world – though unseen by many.  Even within the church there are many confused people who see only the external things of the institutions and not the gist – which is Christ in you!

Perhaps we are tempted to think that the psalmist couldn’t really have sorted all of these things out when he wrote of these precious promises of God, that he was only thinking of political and military power and national glory.  The rest of this psalm makes clear that He was thinking of eternal things, of God’s heavenly kingdom, of the fulfillment of God’s promise to undo the damage of the devil and mankind’s fall into sin.  Anyone familiar with the tenuous nature of the new Davidic kingdom [think Absalom and Adonijah] would not be making boasts about some eternal nature of this earthly kingdom – and sure enough, the external visible “kingdom of Israel” failed miserably, and ultimately perished from the face of the earth.  Not so the kingdom of God’s “Chosen One,” THE Offspring of David Who is Christ the Lord!  He is exalted above every name, every power, every dominion in heaven and earth – and will be forever!  This is the covenant, the eternal covenant in Christ Jesus, and His throne is being built for all generations!

We too are referred to in this psalm, for those who are of the faith of Abraham are the true offspring of Abraham [Gal. 3:7].  So likewise those of the faith of David, those who believe in Christ, are true offspring of David – and members of the eternal kingdom of His Seed, the Lord Jesus Christ.  We too are the fulfillment of these promises to David – God continuing to gather believers in Christ into His glorious heavenly kingdom.  As members of this glorious kingdom of God’s grace, we too shall endure forever! This is the covenant God has made with Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, the Lord Jesus Christ, and with every one of us who believes in Jesus, with all who have come to know and believe God’s great and gracious love for us, all who live in repentance and the joy of God’s forgiveness and mercy.  The rest of this psalm reflects upon the glories of God and His great love for us – and by faith, we will enjoy every strengthening and empowering Word of it!

Scripture Cited

Gal. 3:6-8  “Just as Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.  Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.'”

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, thanks and praise be to You for making great and gracious promises to Your people, and for fulfilling the covenant of love You made to all mankind.  Bind us ever more closely to Yourself through Your gracious and loving Word, that we be strengthened in faith and empowered in love – forever.  Amen.
