February 18 – God’s Faithfulness And Might

“Let the heavens praise Your wonders, O LORD, Your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones!  For who in the skies can be compared to the LORD? Who among the heavenly beings is like the LORD, a God greatly to be feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all who are around Him?  O LORD God of hosts, who is mighty as You are, O LORD, with Your faithfulness all around You?”  Psalm 89:5-8

Devotional Thought For The Day

Passages such as this one perhaps explain why the heathen have invented their pantheons of gods, and have ignorantly drifted into polytheism.  This passage could easily be adapted into praise of Zeus.  No doubt the ancients were aware of a multiplicity of “holy ones” and “heavenly beings,” the council of angels.  Unfortunately, they should also have taken seriously the multiplicity of evil spirits or demons, and should not have naively attributed “divinity” to these wicked enemies of God or instituted worship of them.  This is exactly what the devil accomplished with Eve – that she would take his advice over what God had spoken.  This is the capitulation to evil involved in polytheism – that any being, whether angelic or human, whether good or demonic, should be placed on a level even close to that of God.  The psalmist makes clear that no being can be compared to God, the LORD God of hosts.

One of the unique differences in the Person of God – in addition to the pure power and majesty of God the LORD – is His faithfulness.  His faithfulness is personal, to His Word and to the people that He has spoken His Word to.  Faithfulness is an attribute of love, and therefore the opposite of selfishness and self-interest.  God is love, therefore God is faithful.  Other created beings can love, but this is not their essential nature.  God showed His selfless, sacrificial love for us in giving us His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, Who laid down His life for us in bitter suffering and death for our sins, under the just wrath and punishment of God.  Now, in Him, as God’s gracious and merciful gift of love to us, we have forgiveness and salvation.  “This is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the blood atonement for our sins.” [1 John 4:10]  What other “god” has ever done such a thing?  What other “god” is ever presented in such a way?  What other “god” has such love and faithfulness to humanity?  So, you can gather and grasp the ridiculous absurdity of all polytheism – especially the modern versions!  Lord, have mercy.

The Word that God has given to us, which He is absolutely and completely faithful to – in His faithfulness of love to us, has been recorded and written down in Holy Scripture, the Bible.  Those who are so ignorant, deluded, and bold as to either add to His Word or take away from it, including those demonically moved to question, distort, or deny the truthfulness of God’s Word have capitulated to the demons, to the false “gods,” and have rejected God’s faithfulness and love.  What could possibly be more pitiful, dark, and damnable?  Yet His forgiveness extends even to these people – if only they are willing to repent and return to Him in faith, allowing Him to embrace them with His faithfulness and love.  May God in His mercy grant it to them.  For those of us who know and believe the love that God has for us, God the only True and Living God, may we continue to exult and rejoice in His goodness, His faithfulness, and His wondrous redeeming love for us.  We join the psalmist and all of God’s people of all times and places in praising Him as the only God – unique and incomparable in power, might, faithfulness, and love.

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, You are the great I AM, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, the One and only God, forever blessed, worshiped and glorified.  Thanks and praise to You for Your love, faithfulness, power, glory, and salvation.  How we look forward to seeing You in Your heavenly kingdom, in the council of Your holy ones.  Keep us firm and faithful in Your peace and joy, now and forever.  Amen.
