January 10 – Blessings Of The Light

“Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience.  Therefore do not be partakers with them.  For you were at one time darkness, but now are you light in the Lord: walk as children of light [for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth] proving what is well-pleasing to the Lord.”  Eph. 5:6-10

Devotional Thought For The Day

There are “vain” words – false and deceptive words, and we can be deceived by them.  In fact, there are people who bring them to us.  Whether they know what they are doing or are among those who have been deceived by others and are blindly passing the deceptive words on to others, makes little difference.  What they are communicating are “vain” words [empty, useless, misleading, and evil] and they can and do deceive people, leading them into “darkness” – unbelief, misbelief, and immorality.  We are warned – such vain words can be brought to us, and on occasion will be brought to us, and we can be deceived by them and brought back into darkness.

This deceptiveness is a characteristic of “the children of disobedience.”  Some of these people are fully understanding, and actually cherish the deception they are able to “capture” others with.  Some of these “children of disobedience” may not fully understand that they are subjugated in deception and darkness, and do not fully realize the evil they are doing by urging “vain words” upon others.  Again, one’s awareness doesn’t change the reality that those living in such deception and darkness and bringing such “vain words” to others are in fact “children of disobedience” – and we are warned not to fall back into this through the “vain words” that deceive, that these people bring to us.

The nature of their “disobedience” is made clear.  God’s wrath “comes” upon them.  They are disobedient to God.  This is clear, and can be seen by all, because their “vain words” contradict God’s Word, His clear, direct, objective, unchanging, and authoritative Word provided for all people in Holy Scripture, the Bible.  These “words” of Holy Scripture, His own Words, are neither “vain” nor deceptive – for God’s Word is truth [Jn. 17:17].  The more familiar we are with God’s Word, the Bible, and the more conditioned and trained we are by His Word, the more apparent “vain words” are to us, their nature, their deceptiveness, and the evil that they bring.  The more we grasp and understand this, the more averse we are to “vain words” and the less likely that we would ever allow them to “deceive” us.  In fact, they become repulsive and abhorrent to us.  We are thoroughly disgusted by them.

God’s Word brings “the fruit of the Spirit” and this is “all goodness and righteousness and truth.”  [Goodness, the love and goodness of God and His salvation; Righteousness, the imputed righteousness of Christ through faith in Christ, and all that is in conformity to His Word; Truth – the truth of God’s gracious love and free gift of redemption, salvation, and eternal life in glory to all believers, and all other descriptions of reality, including what is truly good and loving.]  Those who receive His Word, and reject all vain words, are described as “light in the Lord,” and are called “children of light.”  They are filled with this goodness and blessedness – in addition to being delivered from deception and disobedience and darkness.  All of this is effected by God’s Word at work within us.

The contrasts are stark and complete.  The warning is well justified, cogent and compelling.  Of course, those living in the light of God’s gracious and merciful love, His forgiveness and goodness, who delight also in the ways of love, are well aware of the importance of repulsing vain words and immersing themselves in God’s Word.  We rejoice to “walk as children of light,” for we are “light in the Lord,” and it is our chief blessedness, our great privilege and noble purpose to continue in this life of faith and love governed by God’s Word and grace, thus “proving” what is in fact “well-pleasing” to the Lord. May He grant such blessedness to us all forever!

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, we cannot fully grasp the wondrous blessedness You have bestowed upon us through the light of Your love, as conveyed and pressed upon us by Your Word of truth, the Holy Scripture.  Grant us continued growth in discernment of all “vain words,” and loathing for all detestable deception that leads away from Your Word.  Grant repentance to the children of disobedience who are salvageable, and protection for all children of light, through Your Word of truth, that all goodness, righteousness, and truth might flourish.  Amen.
