July 2 – The Blessings Of Listening To God’s Word

“Oh, that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!  I would soon subdue their enemies and turn My hand against their foes.  Those who hate the LORD would cringe toward Him, and their fate would last forever. But He would feed you with the finest of the wheat, and with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.” Psalm 81:13-16

Devotional Thought For The Day

Again the call is back to God’s Word – that people would truly “listen” to God and lovingly submit to His Word.  First and foremost this involves His call to repentance, to honesty in recognizing and confessing our own sins – those of thought, word, deed, and omission. Even more importantly, this means understanding the assurances of His love, His gracious mercy and full forgiveness of all our sins, His free gift of salvation and eternal life. Those who understand God’s love and allow Him to embrace us in this way also come to truly love God, and to love the goodness of His ways.  They are devoted to Him, and seek to live consonant with love, conforming to God’s instruction.

The LORD is not suggesting that we become attuned to some “inner” voice, but rather to His external Word, that recorded in Holy Scripture.  Even if He were to communicate with us directly He would never contradict, change, or alter His written Word – for God does not lie, He does not speak with a forked tongue, nor is He ambiguous or ambivalent toward what is good.  All that we need for life and salvation, and a blessed life of goodness and love has already been supplied to us in His written Word, the Bible [see 2 Tim. 3:14-17 for a description of the complete sufficiency of Holy Scripture]. Besides, the Scripture is full of warning against relying upon what is “within” man, our own “understanding” and “wisdom” – and the enemy is wily and convincing in luring us away from God and His ways with “other voices.”

The blessings promised to those who thus “hear” the LORD are truly marvelous! God promises to crush our enemies and make them fearfully submissive to Him forever. He promises the greatest blessings to those who walk in His ways, including provision of all our needs. This does not mean what we often want it to mean – wealth to take pride in, to trust in, to elevate ourselves above others with, and money to shower ourselves with luxuries.  It does mean that we will be blessed to live quiet and peaceful lives of contentment and gratitude to God, as we bless Him and worship Him for the abundance of His love, mercy, and provision.

Our nation does not have the same purpose and meaning as ancient Israel had. No nation has that purpose – it has already been fulfilled.  But to the degree that God’s people “listen” to Him and walk in His ways, and to the degree that a nation is populated with such people of God, that nation will be richly blessed.  To the degree that a nation turns away from God, “hates” Him and His ways, and persecutes His people, that nation comes under His hand of judgment and punishment, and we must remember that God is always near at hand. The way of greatest personal blessedness is to truly listen to God’s Word and live it, and this provides the greatest service and blessing to those living around us, and to our nation.  May God grant us the love, the will, the perseverance, and the courage to do so.

Scripture Cited

2 Tim. 3:14-17  “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for the many promises of Your Word, of forgiveness and eternal blessedness.  Thank You for the kindly, loving instruction of Your Word – that we may be led and directed to an abundant life of peace and joy.  Help us to truly “listen” to Your Word and conform to it. Grant us such blessedness and enable us to truly be a force for blessing to those around us. Amen.
