June 29 – Only God Can Save Us

Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, ‘Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, Who has sent His angel and delivered His servants, who trusted in Him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God.  Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.'”  Daniel 3:28,29

Devotional Thought For The Day

This is the outcome of the faithfulness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.  Of course, they had to face the daunting and fearful decree of Nebuchadnezzar.  They had to determine and make a decision as to what they were going to do, civil disobedience in obeying God rather than man.  They had to endure being thrust into the fiery furnace – against all common sense.  But in the end, even this wicked king was forced to acknowledge that there is but One True and Living God.  Sadly, he did not convert to full faith and trust in God – much to his detriment and ultimate demise.

Thankfully we are generally immune to such persecution in our time, though there are Christians in parts of the world who face very difficult consequences for following the Lord Jesus Christ. With the stipulations of the current “Health” act, churches and churchly organizations may face coercion to act contrary to the revealed will of God, His Word in Holy Scripture. Likewise, with the march toward legitimizing homosexual behavior, churches may also come under coercion and penalty for teaching and behaving in accord with God’s Word, Holy Scripture – and not accommodating and approving this perversity. Now is the time for us to consider and determine what we will do in the face of such daunting threat, should it come our way.

There will be churches who side with the government, churches which have already reconciled themselves to the idea of abortion, and who have no compunctions against abortifacient drugs.  Many of these same churches have determined to approve of homosexuality, and have fully accepted this behavior which Scripture presents as despicable. They are already buttressing the government and the immoral secularists in our society, as they seek to impose their will upon us.  But God will keep watch over His own, and we must pray that as we continue faithfully in His Word and His will, that eventually our “king” and those like him will have to acknowledge the reality of the only True and Living God, that “there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.”

The more difficult times get for the church the more opportunity there is for bold witness to God, the God of the universe, the only God. Central in this witness is His eternal love for us, for all humanity, demonstrated in the gift of His Son Jesus Christ, our dear Savior.  What we do as Christians, day by day and week by week, continues to bear witness to Him, and our loyalty to His Word and will are precious in His sight. Without such witness there is no hope for other people to come to Nebuchadnezzar’s conclusion – and to move beyond it to genuine faith, trust, worship, and adoration of this marvelous and wonderful God of salvation. We face the same pressures of the devil as God’s people always have; may we like them remain faithful and victorious.

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, You alone can save Your people by displaying Your powerful hand.  We pray Your grace and power that we may remain faithful to You and Your Word no matter what threats or consequences may come our way. Grant enlightenment, faith, and piety to those who rule over us that they may be spared Your judgment. Amen.
