March 22 – That God Is True

“He must increase, but I must decrease. He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what He has seen and heard, yet no one receives His testimony. Whoever receives His testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.” John 3:30-33

Devotional Thought For The Day

These are presumably words from John the Baptist, pointing away from himself and to Jesus Christ, the “Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world.” He goes on to assert that: “The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.” [Jn. 3:35] There is no other for Whom the Father has done this – He sets Jesus Christ, His “only-begotten Son” [Greek = ton uion Autou monogene, Jn. 3:16], over ALL things – since “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him ALL things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – ALL things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before ALL things, and in Him ALL things hold together.” [Col. 1:15-17]

This is unimaginable to most people, even to most Christians, many of whom have never stopped to explore and consider the grandeur and majesty of this “Word” Who was with God in the beginning, and Who “was God,” and Who “became flesh and dwelt among us,” Whose glory was that of the “only begotten from the Father” [Greek = monogenous para Patros], and Who is “full of grace and truth.” [Jn. 1:1-3,14]  “In Him ALL things hold together.” Think cosmos, novas, black holes, ALL the movements and formational dynamics of the stars throughout the universe, and physics – quarks, antimatter, third level subatomic particles, the speed of light and beyond. ALL is held together “in Him”!!!  He comes from heaven, from above, and is “above ALL” [John repeats this for emphasis, to make us stop and consider]! Of course He must increase!

Dismally, but just as factually, John observes: “yet no one receives His testimony.” Do you get how dismal, how astonishing, how dreadful, pathetic, damning, and dark this is?  Yet it remains true to this very day – all too often and too prevalently even within the church, among those who assert faith in Him.  How does this happen?  The most common way in which people refuse to “receive His testimony” is the damnable and blasphemous notion of “interpretation.” If this word denotes merely linguistic study – grammar, definitions, usage, lexicons, comparison with other Scripture texts, then fine and dandy.  However, the vast majority of “interpretation” originates when people know what His testimony is and what it means, but they don’t believe it – and so they have to explain it in a way which conforms not to the native sense and meaning of Jesus’ testimony, His teaching, and not to the rest of Holy Scripture, but rather to other self-chosen criteria [human reason, the pronouncements of the Pope or some other modern day “prophet,” or some non-Biblical “scripture,” or to their own “inner enlightenment” of the “Spirit,” or common sense, yada, yada, yada].

All of this bears witness to one of two deep-seated fallacious and blasphemous assumptions: either God, His only-begotten Son Jesus Who is the exact image of the invisible God, doesn’t know how to speak plainly and clearly enough, or He is untruthful, mistaken, perhaps even an intentional liar – perish all these thoughts in hell, where they came from. This is what we are asserting, one of the two, whenever we do not simply “receive His testimony,” His teaching, with simple faith and trust and complete submission – but rather interpret and conform His Word to something else.  On the other hand, “Whoever receives His testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.”  Is God true?  Of course He is – if He were not true He wouldn’t be God, or at the least He wouldn’t be worthy of worshipping as God.  Even we who are fallen, sinful human beings, know how wretched lying and deceiving truly is!

So, how about it?  Will you also “set your seal to this, that God is true”?  Will you simply receive His testimony?  That He is the Savior of the world, that He has “offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins,” that “by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified”? [Heb. 10:12-14] And what about the rest of His testimony, His Word, the Bible, Holy Scripture?  Will you receive it, and “set your seal to this, that God is true”? Or will you insist upon being among the “interpreters,” the adjusters, the shapers of God’s Word – making it say only what is acceptable to you? Will He be increasing?  Or will you be increasing?  Well, thanks be to God, “He MUST increase” and we MUST decrease. Everything else is pure delusion.

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, majestic beyond our comprehension, Lord and Master of all created things, thanks and praise be to You to for Your grace and truth, for Your “offering” of Yourself on the cross, and for the redemption You have provided for us, for Your gift of forgiveness, eternal life and salvation for all who believe in You. By Your grace and power, may we be among those who set our seal to this, that You are true – by receiving all of Your testimony. Grant us this grace and blessedness, Amen.
