March 4 – Know The Festal Shout!

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before You.  Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of Your face, who exult in Your Name all the day and in Your righteousness are exalted.”  Psalm 89:14-16

Devotional Thought For The Day

No one who is ignorant of “the righteousness of God” can understand the joy of the psalmist.  The apostle Paul clarifies this beyond any question, thanks and praise be to God, so that we can grasp the wondrous grace, mercy, love, forgiveness, and salvation of God, and join in the “festal shout.”  Paul wrote that he had only one desire and goal, higher and more important than anything else – “to be found in Him [Christ], not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.” [Phil. 3:9] That this is what the psalmist had in mind when rejoicing in the “righteousness and justice” that are foundational to God’s throne is evident from the words that follow:  “steadfast love and faithfulness go before You.”  Oh the joy of those who know and believe the love that God has for us!

This is the source and the content of the “festal shout,” the praise of God that arises ceaselessly in the hearts of all believers in Jesus, and frequently from our lips!  We walk in the light of God’s face, the knowledge of His great love and salvation in Christ Jesus, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world, and we know His promise, that “if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”  All the day we exult in God’s righteousness and in God’s Name – not a righteousness of our own.  Rather, we are confessing our sins, acknowledging that even our “righteousnesses are as filthy rags” – but we have the righteousness of God that comes through faith in Christ, “the righteousness from God that depends on faith.”  This is the “festal shout,” and those who know it are blessed beyond measure!

In fact, those who are joined to God forever in the knowledge of His wondrous love, His forgiveness, His mercy, His free gift of salvation and eternal life in Christ Jesus, the righteousness and justice that are the foundation of God’s throne, who exult in His righteousness, are “exalted.”  Obviously, this is utterly and completely undeserved – also part of God’s gracious mercy, His steadfast love and faithfulness!  It simply pleases the Father to have us as His dear children of faith, and to elevate and exalt His own.  We often forget this, or lose sight of it, and the evil one, the enemy of God, wants to diminish the status and stature of God’s children.  Obviously, he cannot do this with God, but he tries to deceivingly accomplish this in our own hearts and minds, to depress us and bring us to despair, to weaken our faith and our joyous knowledge of God’s love, which also diminishes our praise of God.  Don’t let him do this!  Stay with the psalmist, and the people of God, people of faith – and lay claim to all that God has promised us, exulting in Him, and shouting the “festal shout” that “God is love.”  If the evil one comes around to drag you back through the mire, shout it in his face!

“All the day.”  Today, every day, for all of eternity!  Thanks and praise be to God!

 Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, You are the love of God incarnate, the perfect expression and revelation of God’s great love for us!  You are our Redeemer, our Savior, our righteousness, and our sanctification.  Keep us firm in faith, and joyful in Your salvation, filled with the festal shout, giving our thanks and praise to You all the day, and forever!  Amen.
