May 4 – The Word Of God Prevails

“Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal.  But the Word of God is not bound!  Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.  The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us; if we are faithless, He remains faithful— for He cannot deny Himself.” 2 Timothy 2:8-13

Devotional Thought For The Day

We are urged to remember the truths regarding Jesus Christ as “preached” in Paul’s gospel – this is true gospel of Jesus Christ, written in the pages of Holy Scripture by the eye witnesses and disciples of Christ, the New Testament, which no one can change or alter, although the spirit of the antichrist has been offering up alternatives from the days of the true apostles to these very latter days.  We know from their writings that even in Paul’s time false prophets were distorting, tweaking, and inventing new so-called “gospels.” [see Gal. 1:1-9 and 1 John 4:1-6] Thus those who remain true to God’s Word, His written word from the prophets and apostles suffer the same opposition, antagonism, and at times persecutions as the authors of Holy Scripture suffered. It is a continuous stream.

Those captured by the glory of God’s great love for us as taught in “Paul’s gospel,” and captivated by the Word of God may suffer many things, but our greatest joy is that “the Word of God is not bound!”  Whoever thinks that they have “overcome” or “conquered” or “silenced” this Word of God, that Word of God provided for all of mankind through the true prophets and apostles in the pages of the Bible, is utterly deluded!  The spirit of the antichrist has been trying this for nearly 2,000 years now, inventing heresies, blasphemies, and even new religions, but the Scripture is more prevalent, plain, clear, and populous than ever – though fewer people are willing to join Paul and those who adhere to this true gospel.  We suffer this as well, but in the end, nothing will matter but the Word of God, the Bible, which lives and abides and endures forever [1 Pet. 1:25].

The reason why we doggedly adhere to this true Gospel of God’s gracious mercy, forgiveness, and free gift of eternal life and salvation is the same as Paul’s: “for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”  This is not possible where “works” are taught as the basis of restored relationship with God and the gain of eternal life. This is not possible where the truths regarding the nature of God and of His glorious incarnate Son are denied, corrupted, and perverted. Those who are captured in “law” mentality and “works” spirituality are incapable of understanding the peace and joy that is ours in Christ Jesus, in the Gospel of His gracious mercy and love, His work of saving us – and so they look at this Gospel as perverse, as inclining people to licentiousness, as unfair – and so they cannot help but deny, reject, repudiate, and repulse this good news. Whether adherents of Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, or some ancient or modern cult that uses Christ’s name, they are all of the same basic ilk.

We endure whatever they heap upon us because we know the trustworthy and true assertion of the reality of God: “If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He also will deny us; if we are faithless, He remains faithful— for He cannot deny Himself.” Whatever our weaknesses, failings, foibles, and faithlessness, He remains faithful to those who have died with Him in baptism, who live with Him through true faith, and who endure all opposition to the true Gospel, the real “apostolic” Gospel, with Him. Only those who deny Him, His rich grace, mercy, love, and gift of salvation, are denied by Him. But this we cannot do – deny Him – regardless of how clever, powerful, cunning, or threatening and destructive the enemies of Christ’s Gospel may be.

So we “remember” Him, risen from the dead, true offspring of David in accord with Messianic proclamation, Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world, whose blood cleanses us from ALL sin – as preached by Paul and all true servants of God’s Word. We agree with Paul, with great joy, that we have been saved by grace, through faith, and not of works, it is the gift of God – so that no one may boast. And remembering, we are bound in loyalty and faithfulness to Him!

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, to this day the glorious work of Your redemption is controverted, diminished, and repudiated by so many, and those who remain true to Your Word are abased and abused. Grant us joy in Your salvation, and constancy and faithfulness in proclaiming Your Word, for the sake of the elect. Grant us joy and confidence in Your promises, that You and Your Word will indeed prevail. Amen.
