November 23 – Thanksgiving After Thanksgiving

“And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land He has given you.  Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His rules and His statutes, which I command you today, lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, . . . Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”  Deut. 8:10-14,17,18

Devotional Thought For The Day

I can remember my younger days when I would eat twice as much as I did yesterday in celebration of Thanksgiving Day, and not be near as “full.”  Though we ate moderately, it seems that the rich food is more difficult to accommodate comfortably. The LORD has indeed blessed us richly, so that we can “eat and be full.”  Millions of Americans experienced this same thing yesterday – and we should take great care NOT to “forget” that the LORD our God has blessed us to live in this great and bountiful country, AND that it is the Lord “who gives you power to get wealth.”  Our relationship with His Word is the key to His continued blessing – His Word which enables us to “know and believe the love that God has for us” in Christ Jesus, and His Word which defines, establishes, instructs, and guides us in the ways of love for one another. People who respect and submit to God’s Word have assurance that He will continue to bless them.  Both those who attribute success to themselves [capitalists], as well as those who credit “the government” for our success [socialists], need to rethink their “posturing.”  As we have seen dramatically over the course of the past few years, the LORD can also humble a nation and devastate our wealth.

Our salvation in Christ Jesus is based in the same dynamics as the deliverance of the children of Israel from slavery in Egypt.  God has chosen us, has delivered us from sin, guilt, and death, with a mighty hand – sending His own dear Son to be our Savior, to take our sin and guilt upon Himself, to offer Himself up as the sacrifice, the blood atonement which takes away all of our sins, the sins of the whole world.  All was accomplished by His grace, mercy, and love for us, and we are invited to receive all blessedness through simple faith in Jesus.  Of course, faith is never a “simple” thing.  Through faith we know and see the blessed, glorious, and powerful love of God and this transforms our hearts and minds and being so that we too are empowered to love – “we love because He first loved us.” [1 Jn. 4:19] Faith is such a wondrous gift of God, such a powerful and compelling reality – and faith is given to us by God’s grace through His Word [Rom. 10:17]

This same blessedness is extended to all people through God’s Word – and it is the greatest human tragedy and sorrow that the vast majority choose to ignore and disbelieve God’s great love for us. So many continue to assert that food, houses, and wealth have been gained by their own power and that they have no need for God, for His Word, and worst of all no need of His forgiveness and salvation.  If you are a believer, give thanks and praise to God for this and humble yourself under His Word. If you are a believer, remember where faith and blessedness come from – God’s gracious Word, Holy Scripture, the Bible.  If you are a believer, then your whole life becomes a wonderment over God’s gracious mercy and love. If you are a believer, then you constantly remember that every good and every perfect gift comes from above, from our Heavenly Father, and your life is filled with thanksgiving and praise of God.  We are more thankful for this than for all of our earthly temporal blessings.

Pray God that our witness to His love may touch the hearts and minds of many around us, that they too may come to faith, knowing and believing God’s great love for us!  May God grant that we continue to enjoy the blessings promised to those who abide in His Word.  May we all understand and appreciate the blessings that come to us through His Word, and how that Word comes to us within the life of His own church.

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, there is so much for which we must give thanks to You!  Every blessing and joy in life comes from Your good and gracious hand.  Forever, we will be celebrating Your goodness and love, and giving You praise and thanksgiving.  Touch the hearts of many people around us that they too may join us in faith and thanksgiving.  Remind us to remain devoted to Your precious Word.  Amen.
