October 29 – The Blessings Of Christ’s Kingdom

“Truth springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky.  Yes, the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.  Righteousness will go before Him and make His footsteps a way.” Psalm 85:11-13

Devotional Thought For The Day

The psalmist concludes this wonderful prophecy of the Lord Jesus Christ with further description of His glorious reign and kingdom. Within His kingdom, the church, truth springs up abundantly – such honesty and integrity of heart that laments and confesses our sins but rejoices in His full and complete forgiveness and pardon. Righteousness falls upon His people of faith like rain from the sky, that righteousness which is accounted to us by faith in Jesus Christ, the very righteousness of God [Phil. 3:9].  This comes to us by the preaching of Christ’s Word, Holy Scripture, by the absolution granted by His servants by His command and His authority, through the blessings of Holy Baptism which contains His promise of forgiveness and the gift of His Holy Spirit [Acts 2:38,39], and in the precious gift of His supper.  What a wondrous blessedness is found within His kingdom, in the life of the church.

Where the Lord Christ reigns there are also temporal blessings – “the LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.”  As we contemplate the devastating effects of this year’s drought and recall past weather related disasters, and are fearful of the current monster storm bearing down on the East Coast, we should pray God for His mercy and compassion – and also that our fellow citizens might once again turn to God in humble confession and faith.  While it is a wondrous thing to dwell in His kingdom with the assurances of His love and blessing, it is a fearful thing to fall under His judgment and into the hands of the only True and Living God [Heb. 10:31].  And it is a hellish thing to live devoid of His truth and His gift of righteousness in Christ Jesus – but it only gets much worse when His hand of judgment falls upon those who reject Him and His Word.  Lord, have mercy!

Let us rejoice in the blessings of Christ Jesus – Who by His righteousness has made “a way” for us!  Indeed, He is “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” [Jn. 14:6].  The early church was often referred to as “the Way” [Acts 9:2; 19:9,23; 22:4; 24:14,22], for we are all called to follow Jesus, to walk in His footsteps, abiding in His Word.  All who put their faith and trust in Him, rejoicing in His gracious mercy and forgiveness are in “the Way,” and it is our great joy to also follow in His way in how we live our lives in this world.  These are the blessings bestowed upon us by the LORD, the only True and Living God, within His church.  These are the blessings He wills all people to have – through repentance and faith in Jesus. These are the blessings we also will for all people to have, especially our fellow citizens.  The time for refreshing and peace may be short for those who have plunged themselves into the dark wickedness of these latter times.  It is a critical time for us to bear witness to Christ, to speak of His redeeming love to others, to model the blessedness of life in “the Way,” and to pray for the conversion of the many who remain ignorant of God’s love.

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for the blessings of Your kingdom, the righteousness You pour down upon us, and the truth that You have caused to spring up within Your church.  We pray that You would give us boldness to follow You, to remain in the way, and that others might come to know You and Your love.  Preserve the innocent from the devastation of Your judgment and bless our nation with repentance.  We ask this, imploring Your gracious mercy.  Amen.
