September 10 – The Blessedness Of God’s House

“How lovely is Your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the Living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at Your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in Your house, ever singing Your praise! Selah.”  Psalm 84:1-4

Devotional Thought For The Day

I’m very happy to be past some of the more harsh and dismal psalms we have been meditating on over the past few months. This leads us to consider that the psalms are small books that are fit for various circumstances, and that each has its time and season and application. This psalm focuses on the great blessings and joys of worship, and the blessings that are bestowed upon us for all of life through worship.

Of course not every place of “worship” is thus blessed.  The psalm is talking about worship of “the Living God,” the only True and Living God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three Divine Persons, but One Divine Being and Essence, a mystery beyond our full comprehension but one that is not to be denied, tampered with, or muddled. It is at His altars alone that these blessings are bestowed and at no others, for what is worshiped at other altars are no real “Gods” – there are no other “deities” in reality.  Blessed are those who know this God, the Living God, and where His altars are to be found!  Blessed are those who have Him as their “King and God.”

What is it that makes His altars so “lovely”?  It is His Word, Holy Scripture, the Bible, by which He reveals Himself to us, all of His love and goodness, which is at the core of true worship of God.  It is sad that so many don’t seem to understand this, and that so many who “represent” God to us don’t seem to grasp this.  His Word is filled with the assurances of His gracious love, mercy, and forgiveness, the promise and assurance that all of our sins have been washed away and forgiven in the suffering, death, and resurrection of His Beloved Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that He is fully reconciled to us and deeply desires that we turn to Him in repentance and faith and be reconciled to Him in love.  This too is a blessed reality that dare not be denied, tampered with, or muddled, for “God is love.”  Imagine His indignation and anger when He is falsely represented to others so that they are kept from truly knowing Him.

This is what makes His dwelling place and His altars so lovely, and what compels those who truly know Him to long for worship each Sunday – not His commandment.  His commandment was given out of love for us, so that we are freed to understand that nothing should keep us from this great blessedness and joy of dwelling upon His Word of gracious love and worshiping Him.  It is His great love for us that keeps our heart and flesh “ever singing Your praise” with great joy and delight – “as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, Amen.”  May God grant us these great blessings – which He in His own Word has assured us that He wants us to have!

Prayer For The Day

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to grasp the great loveliness of Your wondrous love, mercy, and forgiveness, that we too find our greatest joy in meditating upon Your Word and singing Your praise. Grant us all other blessings through faith in Your Word, but especially that we may dwell in Your house forever. Amen.
