September 24 – The Super-Blessedness Of God’s House

“Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of Your Anointed!  For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.  For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in You!”  Psalm 84:9-12

Devotional Thought For The Day

The Hebrew word translated as “Anointed” is “mashiak,” which we know more familiarly as the word translated into Greek as “Christos” and transliterated into English as “Messiah.”  This is the nub of Christianity – that God so loved the world that He gave us His Son, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world, as our Messiah, to be our shield.  When God looks upon us – regardless of our sin and darkness, He “looks” on the face of His own Anointed One, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and obviously He is most favorably disposed toward us, for He loves us in Christ with a love that is beyond comprehension.  In perfect accord with this we are assured that “if anyone does sin we have an advocated with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous, and He is the blood atonement for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”  [1 John 2:1,2]   He, God’s own Anointed One, is our Shield!

What takes place within courts of the Lord, in the Lord’s house, that makes it “better than a thousand elsewhere”? It is the reality of God’s great love for us in His Anointed – His assurance of forgiveness, of peace with God, of His love and blessing, His promise of eternal life and pleasures we cannot imagine in His heavenly kingdom, all given to us in His Word.  It is simply being in His presence and exulting in the warmth and glory of His love for us in Christ Jesus – which is conveyed to us through His precious Word, Holy Scripture.  It is also the great pleasure of learning the ways of real and genuine love as we are weaned away from the darkness of selfishness, greed, anger, hatred, fear, false belief, and rebellion against God – through His Word, the Bible.  Though this all initially feels terribly alien to our fallen sinful nature, and even painful, it comes to feel much more normal and comfortable as our time with God goes on – for this is our real nature, what He created us to be in the image of God, and it is our eternal destiny, to the praise of His glorious grace.

There is no comparison between this blessedness of God’s house and “the tents of wickedness.” Oh, we are well aware of the lure that these “fleshpots” have for our sinful nature – and also the nauseating result of indulgence in sin. There is no such hangover from our time in the Lord’s house.  What blessed assurance that as we continue in the path that He has set us on in His Anointed, Who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, “the LORD God is a sun and shield” for us, and that “the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”  Yes, faith is required as we also pass through “much tribulation” [Acts 14:22], but as we humbly persevere in our life of faith, we too will conclude: “O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in You!”

Such is the blessedness of being in the “house of God.” I pray that you have found such a house, where God’s precious and gracious Word of love is the center and permeates the worship and fellowship with God.  I also pray that you have discovered the great joy and pleasure of His house – in His Anointed, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, so that you also are among those who are “blessed” to trust in the Lord!

Scripture Cited

Acts 14:22 “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”

Prayer For The Day

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, thanks and praise be to You, our great Sun and Shield, for the redemption and salvation that You have produced for us in Your suffering, death, and resurrection.  Thank You for the blessedness You provide for us in the worship and fellowship of Your house, through Your blessed and precious Word to us. Grant us peace and joy in Your blessings, that we also remain eager to dwell in Your house forever. Amen.
