EASTER 5 – May 19, 2019 – Rev. 21:1-7 “WHAT IS COMING”

Introduction:  Grace be to you and peace, from God our Father, and from our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.  Our text is the Epistle Lesson just read, from Rev. 21.  We begin with prayer.

Dear fellow disciples of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ:

  • Vision and focus are important skills and talents given to us by God, and exercised by us as circumstances demand. Some jobs require “micro-management,” that is, a very concentrated focus on things that are quite small.  Other jobs require vision – looking well into the future before expending resources, lest what we build and accomplish have a short shelf-life.
  • It is no different in our life as Christians, and our exercise of the spiritual gifts that God has given to us. Many things require our full attention to what could be seen as minutia.
  • However, “WHAT IS COMING” as revealed to us in Holy Scripture is intended to form and shape us, and also to inform us as to how we should live our life here and now. This is why the Revelation was given to St. John, and why He was instructed to write it down for us.
  • Often the description of the new heaven and new earth are a bit hard to envision, but many clear and concrete realities are shared with us – so that we might know with certainty how blessed we will be as children of God. So let us carefully consider some of these blessings.  First:

I.  God Has Promised Us A New Heaven And A New Earth, And The Heavenly Jerusalem

Text:  “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”

Statement:  More and more people are cringing at the kind of pollution that has become so common place in the present earth and sea.  It is somewhat depressing and demoralizing even without the doomsday whining of some ecologists.  We often like to clean places up – our yards, our homes, our church property, our parks, our mountains.  But when faced with the challenge of cleaning up some of the most polluted places it seems impossible.

Application:  Perhaps this is in part why God will do away with the present heaven and earth and sea.  This will not negate the dangerous conditions that we will live with in this lifetime, but it does assure us that our desires to have a clean and beautiful environment will ultimately be fulfilled by God!  And further:

II.  This New Creation Will Be The Home Of God And His People

Text:  “I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.  He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.”

Statement:  It is a great blessing that God has promised to be with us always, until the end of this age.  But here and now not all things are perfect, loving, harmonious, and good.  And here God is still in a mode of covering His glory, so that human beings might be won over to Him simply by His love.  But in the new creation we shall see Him as He is [1 Jn. 3:2].

Application:  What a wonderful blessing it will be to live in place where weeds do not have to sprayed, where it will not require great sweat and effort to mow lawns, things in nature will not be out of kilter, and we will not have to fear anything in nature!  What a marvel that all of us will have God as our neighbor – that He will be God to all human inhabitants of heaven, and we will all be His dear children!  We know this will be the case since:

III.  God Promises Us Blessings Galore

A.  He Will Wipe All Tears Away

Text:  “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

B.  There Will Be No More Death, Mourning, Or Pain

Text:  “Death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

C.  Everything Is New

Text:  “He Who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold I am making all things new.’ “

Statement:  Much of our time is this world is grievous.  Not only can we not keep sorrowful things out of our own lives, we cannot protect our children and loved ones from griefs, sorrows, pains, injuries, illnesses, accidents, and other disasters!  We can envision a “safe” environment, and we realize that there is nothing that prevents this– except human sin and wretchedness.  This we cannot eradicate – for it is within us as well, and we contribute to the pain with our own sin.

Application:  But what is impossible for man is not impossible for God – but it is a little bit surprising that He has to start all over!  Nonetheless, we will be the recipients and beneficiaries of this blessings!   And make no mistake about this, for:

IV.  All Of This Is Absolutely Certain

A.  God Has Done It

Text:  “He Who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold I am making all things new.’  Also He said, ‘Write this down, for these Words are trustworthy and true.’  And He said to me, ‘It is done!  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”

B.  He Does All Of This To Bless His People With Abundant And Beautiful Life

Text:  “To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.  The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be My son.”

Statement:  This is “WHAT IS COMING,” by the blessing, promise, love, and power of God!  John must have been blown away by the poignancy of this vision!

Application:  God wants us to be blown away as well, so that we patiently suffer the ills of this present world, which is burdened by human sin.  He wants us to suffer it, rather than become infatuated with it.  For He wants us to look forward to the stupendous blessings that will be ours in heaven, the home of righteousness!

Conclusion:  So as we go through life in this world, and grind away at difficult tasks – some requiring tremendous focus and attention, and others requiring vision and wisdom – let us remember that all of this is temporal and inferior, infected with human sin.

Let us look carefully at “WHAT IS COMING” by the blessing of God, so that we carefully live out lives of love and decency in all that we do, and also so that our investments in this life take into account our heavenly destiny and purpose!

God grant us such blessedness here and now, even as He will surely grant even greater blessedness at the end.  Amen.

Votum:  And the peace of God, which surpasses all human understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds in the true faith, which is in Christ Jesus, even unto life everlasting.  Amen.
