EASTER 7 – Confirmation – May 13, 2018 – 1 John 5:9-15 “LIFE CONFIDENCE”

Introduction:  Grace be to you and peace, from God our Father, and from our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.  Our text is the Epistle Lesson just read, from 1 John 5.  We begin with prayer.

Dear fellow disciples of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ:

  • A lot of people have faith.  People have faith in a lot of different things.  And people have faith for a lot of different reasons.  Unfortunately, people do not always scrutinize the foundation of their faith, and as is readily apparent, “faith is only as good as its object.”  That is, faith is only as good as what it is based upon.  If the foundation is faulty, then the faith is also faulty.
  • In our text, the apostle John indicates the “basis” or “object” of Christian faith.  What we believe is of immense importance.  Why we believe, or the basis upon which we believe, is also of immense importance.  After all, if the reason that we believe is questionable or fallible, then our faith is in jeopardy.
  • There is no greater foundation or certainty than that provided for us in our text, namely that our faith is based on “the testimony of God,” the “testimony He has borne concerning His Son.”  And if one has faith and trust based upon God’s testimony, then he also has great and tremendous confidence in His faith.
  • And because of the “what” of God’s testimony, the content of our faith, we know that God wants us to have great “LIFE CONFIDENCE.”  We desire this blessing for ourselves, and also for our children, and especially for our dear confirmands.  This is in large part the motivation for putting you through two years of rigorous instruction!
  • All of this is the blessing and gift of God, which He wills to impart to each of us!  And it is certain that:

I.  The Testimony That God Gives, Gives Us Life

Text:  “This is the testimony [of God], that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

A.  Note – This Is Eternal Life, And It Is In Jesus

Text:  “This is the testimony [of God], that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.”

B.  Whoever Has Jesus Has Life

Text:  “Whoever has the Son has life. . . . I write these things to you who believe in the Name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life.”

C.  God’s Testimony Has The Highest Authority, And God Has Placed This Testimony In Us By The Gift Of Faith

Text:  “The testimony of God is greater . . . Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself.”

Statement:  The argument around this foundation is made certain by the apostle John.  We do receive “the testimony of men.”  We do so in incredibly momentous matters every day in courts of law.  But obviously, just as God is greater than men, and God is far more truthful than men, so His testimony is greater!  And wondrously, thankfully, His testimony is “concerning His Son,” the Savior of the world.  In Him we have forgiveness, eternal life and salvation, and peace with God!

Application:  This is what we believe, that God is love, and that He has provided us with everything we need for a verdict of innocent, and entrance into heaven, in the suffering, death, and resurrection of His own Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.  We believe this because it is God’s own testimony!  And if this is true of us, of our faith, than we have an impregnable and unshakeable faith – and the utmost “LIFE CONFIDENCE.”

Transition:  And this confidence is not only in regard to our eternal life and future, but:

II.  This Faith And Life In Christ Gives Us Great Confidence Also For This Life

A,  We Know, Based On This Faith, On God’s Testimony, That He Always Hears Our Requests

Text:  “This is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us.”

B.  Knowing This We Also Know That We Have Whatever We Ask Of God, In Accordance With His Will

Text:  “And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him.”

Statement:  You can see the kind of confidence that God wants us to have in Him – all through faith in Him, faith in His testimony regarding His Son, our Savior!   Knowing that the most important things, the things regarding our eternal future, have all been taken care of and resolved, we can also be sure that God will take care of us abundantly in this life.

Application:  Surely He will not give us things that will be bad for us, but whatever is good for us, this He will surely grant to us.  So we do not need to worry that we don’t have this, or we don’t have that; whatever we have is just perfect for us.  And if we have any genuine need, we need only ask – and we can have absolute confidence God will grant it!

Transition:  But let us take care, for:

III.  Unbelief Is Evil And Insidious In Nature

A.  It Calls God A Liar

Text:  “Whoever does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning His Son.”

B.  There Is No Life In Unbelief

Text:  “Whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

C.  And Without Life There Can Be No Certainly Of God’s Blessings

Statement:  We don’t often think of it, but there are obviously disadvantages to not believing what should be believed!  This is especially so when it comes to God!  And it is not so much that He is angry and insulted when by unbelief we call Him a liar.  What really hurts Him is that He is eager to grant us great blessings, but unbelief refuses and rejects His blessings!

Application:  Therefore God warns us, and strongly encourages us to believe in Him, and to believe Him, especially the testimony that He has given in regard to His Son, our Savior.  He wants us to have life, forgiveness and peace with Him in this life, and eternal life and salvation in the age to come.  And He wants us to live confidently here and now – assured of His watchfulness and His blessing.

Conclusion:  There is nothing more certain than that which has “the testimony of God.”  God wants us to believe Him, so that we may have “LIFE CONFIDENCE” throughout our days.

We certainly want this same confidence to dwell in all our children, and especially our dear confirmands.  This is God’s will, and so we pray that He would grant it, we have sure and certain confidence that He will.  Amen.

Votum:  And the peace of God, which surpasses all human understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds in the true faith, which is in Christ Jesus, even unto life everlasting, Amen.
